Reading on an e-ink screen

Choose View › Appearance › E-ink to turn the whole app black on white with no shadows or motion, or press ⌥⌘E for E-ink reading, which changes only the page and keeps your theme. Better PDF remembers the choice per display.

E-ink is an appearance, not a driver, so it works with any e-ink monitor your Mac can use as a display.

Two ways to use it

E-ink appearance — View › Appearance › E-ink. The whole app becomes pure black on white: no translucency, no shadows, no hover tints and no animation. Glyphs switch to their own ink pack, drawn in outline so they stay crisp on a slow panel.

E-ink reading — ⌥⌘E. Only the page changes. The window keeps your theme, the way night reading does.

E-ink and night reading are exclusive: turning one on turns the other off.

What changes on the page

  • Pages are drawn in greyscale quantised to four levels, so halftones and photos do not shimmer when the panel refreshes.
  • Highlights show as a grey band, so they stay visible without colour.
  • The document shows one page at a time and turns whole pages: use ← → or Page Up and Page Down.

Remembered per display

Better PDF keeps the appearance for each monitor. Move the window to the e-ink screen and it switches to e-ink; move it back to your main display and it returns to the appearance you use there.

E-ink is part of the free app.
