Updates, diagnostics and privacy
The direct download checks betterpdf.co once a day for updates, sends no system profile and can be turned off in Settings › General; the App Store edition updates through the App Store. Help › Diagnostics… builds a zip you can read before you send it yourself. Nothing leaves your Mac on its own.
Updates
Direct download. Better PDF checks betterpdf.co/appcast.xml once a day. The request carries no system profile. It asks before installing anything; automatic install is off unless you turn it on. Turn checking off, or on, in Settings › General. Choose Check for Updates… in the Better PDF menu to look now.
Mac App Store. Updates come through the App Store. The App Store edition has no updater of its own.
Release notes for every version are on the release notes page.
Diagnostics
If something goes wrong, choose Help › Diagnostics…. Better PDF shows you a zip before anything is saved:
- a summary and the app’s own log from the last seven days,
- the newest crash reports (direct download only),
- the token driver status, for signing questions,
- your preferences, with PINs, serials and token details removed.
Paths in your home folder, volume names, e-mail addresses, PINs and serials are scrubbed. No document names or contents are included. You choose where to save the zip, and you send it yourself. Nothing is sent on its own.
The only network calls
Better PDF has no account, no analytics and no crash upload. It makes two kinds of network request, and both are yours to switch:
- The update check (direct download only): once a day, no system profile, off in Settings › General.
- RFC 3161 time-stamps: off until you turn them on in Settings › Signing; only a hash of the signature is sent.
Everything else, from reading to OCR to signing, happens on your Mac. The full policy is on the privacy page.
